One reason why Act 1 wasn’t quite up to par was that the orchestra drowned out not only the Historian’s words at the start of the play, but the words of several of Act 1’s songs as well. Happily, musical director Katie Coleman and her capable musicians worked out the kinks as the act progressed, so that Idle’s clever lyrics became easier to hear. Strangely enough, the musical really came alive when Eric Borchers and a cartload of dead bodies perked up to sing “I’m Not Dead Yet.” And, though the supercilious King Arthur (likeable, rubber faced Michael Monagle) and his loyal-to-the-end sidekick Patsy (a surprisingly subdued Joey McDaniel) take a while to get into their groove, it’s his rag-tag group of Knights of the Round Table that really stand out.
